About Penmon

Penmon is a typical Anglesey village with great views towards Llandudno and Snowdonia. It is best known for the romantic ruins of Penmon Priory and Dovecot which date from around the 13th century.

Out at sea is the well known seabird sanctuary Puffin Island, this has 12 species of seabirds and a colony of seals. It also has the visible remains of a Norman church. Very little is known about the island's history save for the fact that it is believed to have been the home of a hermit in the year 540.

Watching over the waters between Penmon and Puffin Island is the lighthouse built following the tragic loss of the steamship Rothesay Castle in 1831 when passengers and crew lost their lives. The lighthouse, built upon the stony pebbles of the beach is singularly atmospheric, capturing the imagination of everyone, particularly when lit against the night-time sky.

From nearby Beaumaris there are pleasure boat cruises round Puffin Island and the Menai Straits. This is one of the best ways to appreciate the stunning shoreline scenery and the panorama of the island.
